the avengers style guide
"Superheroes? In New York? Give me a break!"
~ Stan Lee
S.H.I.E.L.D., Shawarma, and sceptors: what more do you need in life? (A dash of Loki wouldn't hurt either...) It was the year 2012 when The Avengers dominated theaters by storm, captivating Marvel zealots amidst popcorn buckets and fanfiction. I myself fondly recall my first viewing of The Avengers; I was one of the late bloomers, catching the flick sometime mid-June, long after all the comic book aficionadios had raided the theaters in May. It was mid-afternoon, and my friend and I felt the heavens unveiling before us when we discovered that we would have the luxury of sitting in the upstairs theater. Now, the upstairs theater is somewhat of a mysterious delicacy for the youngins under 21. I have only heard of the dreamy armchairs and impeccable waiter service, but never have I actually experienced this paradise myself.
Flushed with excitement, my friend and I clutched our student discount tickets and did the unthinkable: headed up the escalator. I may never know why I got to enjoy The Avengers from the comforts of my plush velvet armchair (sans popcorn tragically), but from that moment on, I knew I had developed an (unhealthy) obsession with this certain flick. From Iron Man to Agent Coulson, no character was immune from my terrifying power of Tumblr reblogging. It is difficult to despise a movie that has not only spanned three cinematic offsprings (and more to come), but is packed full of witty lines, authentic humor, and the most intense action sequences yet. Plus, the whole Avengers cast is pure eye candy, and I mean it (do yourself a favor and utilize that Google search). Even JARVIS has a voice destined to swoon your hearts (or maybe that's just me...)
The Avengers is essentially a melting pot of everyone's favorite superheroes: there's a healthy dose of Iron Man for the Robert Downey Jr. groupies out there, Mark Ruffalo nabs his first appearance as the Hulk, Chris Evans reprises his role as Captain America (cue the lovestruck eyes), crimefighting duo Black Widow and Hawkeye get the movie treatment by Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner, and Chris Hemsworth charms audiences as the legendary Thor. And, in my case, Tom Hiddleston (aka the ultimate dreamboat), plays my favorite villain, Loki.
And here today to mix my love for both films and fashion, I have created five special inspired by every Avengers character! Think of this as blending superhero chic with the styles of reality.
Hello, champange flutes and fancy appetizers (shrimp ceviche, anyone?) Channel your inner Iron Man by going all glamour with a pleated circle dress. Keep your overall color scheme rich with wine reds and metallic golds. Opt for a rose-gold geometric clutch and matching ankle-strap heels, and paint the town red with a sleek coat of lipstick and nail varnish. Stark may have invested much funds to craft his Iron Man suit, but you can too easily play inventor with your own million-dollar ensemble. The overall concoction is one of simplistic elegance, and perfect for a formal event or Saturday night date. And, as always, lather up on that Tony Sark charm!
While I may have been emotionally destroyed by both of the Captain America flicks (*cough* Bucky Barnes *cough*), that didn't stop me from envisioning a contemporary outfit for the imaginary female Steve Rogers. If Captain America spent a lazy Sunday cafe-hopping with friends, this would be the ultimate uniform. This look emphasizes the casual cool essence, starting with a pair of printed trousers for ultra comfort. Finish off with a red cropped top and white slip-ons to execute the patriotic color palette. Choose a circle bag as a nod to Cap's iconic shield, and adorn your fingers with an actual shield ring to pay honor to your classic American superhero.
Thor, it's time you meet your streetstyle blogger equivalent. Embrace a heather gray shirt dress as your fighting sidekick; on top, layer a maroon leather vest to mimic Thor's majestic red cape. Learn how to properly reign over the kingdom of Asgard with white ankle-strap heels because, well, they're cute. Swap Thor's trusty hammer for an equally powerful 3.1 Phillip Lim number, and slide on a pair of black cat-eye sunglasses for the true blogger look. When Thor isn't preoccupied chasing his ever-so-mischevious younger brother Loki, I'd like to imagine him playing his second role as a highly successful blogger who enjoys Instagramming coffee and sunsets.
If the Hulk were to ever meet his hipster-bred double, this would be the most scientifically accurate result. Lifting inspiration from the Hulk's green and purple color combo, start off with this base: a cropped plain tee and high-waisted satin shorts. Allow for pops of gold through a statement necklace and ring. Your piece de resistance? A holographic backpack, perfect for toting around your lab research papers in trendy manner. White sneakers round out this ensemble, adding a splash of modern day normcore. I can imagine it already: Bruce Banner ruling cyberspace by day as a famed Tumblr icon while playing physicist by night.
one VINCE CAMUTO / two THE ROW 67 / three KAREN WALKER / four ARITZIA / five TOPSHOP / six MARC BY MARC JACOBS
Please don't murder me for combining Black Widow and Hawkeye as one ensemble, but the inner fangirl in me cannot help but obsessively ship them together at every given moment (and let's be real: ScarJo and Jeremy Renner definitely aced that on-screen chemistry test). When Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton are cloaked in their enemy annihilating get-ups, the overall vibe is the sartorially-inclined spy. A cropped black eyelet blouse perfectly captures the right amount of edginess, while a matching skort keeps the look sophisticated and clean. Black cut-out booties are your BFF when it comes to scaling walls in style, while maroon red accessories add a dash of subtle color. Guns and bow and arrows optional.
